Experience-Wii: Innovative Viral Ads

A lot of ads online look the same. And because of that, nobody clicks on them - if you've seen it once, you've seen it a hundred times. Also, people tend not to trust advertising too much online; everybody assumes it'll be spam, (and the less technically adept may assume it is "viral" in the bad way).

So, how do you make an ad viral in a good way? By innovating, taking something that's different from what people normally see and throwing a curveball.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Nintendo Wii's Warioware Youtube Advertisement: "Shake it!"

Pictures after the jump~

Chronological breakdown of the ad:

Photobucket
Start: Other video links on the right fall off screen

Photobucket
Video shakes screen

Photobucket
Coins fly out of screen

Photobucket
Stuff is falling down

Photobucket
The stars from the rankings are breaking off now

Photobucket
Pretty much everything is destroyed...

Photobucket
...and it piles up at the bottom of the screen!

The ad works like a regular Youtube video, for the most part. It pauses, plays, skips, has volume, etc. There are even comments, ratings and other videos on the side, which really makes it look like a regular Youtube video. The ad capitalizes on this fact, and then does something unexpected, which really catches a lot of attention, and looks cool in the process.

And I know it worked, since I am now posting it here. I first found the site among a bunch of links, and it stood out like a sore thumb, then subsequently I ended up sending it to a bunch of other people (who have summarily done the same). I doubt the ad cost that much, (since somebody could whip it up a flash equivalent by themselves) and yet it is both eye-catching/attention grabbing, AND informative (since "Shaking it" is entirely what the game is about)
